Fort Bragg

Camp Bragg was established on September 4th, 1918, as an artillery training ground. In early 1921, two field artillery units, the 13th and 17th Field Artillery Brigades, began training at Camp Bragg.

Camp Bragg was renamed Fort Bragg, to signify becoming a permanent Army post, on September 30th, 1922. The Field Artillery Board was transferred to Fort Bragg on February 1st, 1922. From 1923 to 1924, permanent structures were constructed on Fort Bragg, including four brick barracks that still stand.

By 1940, the population of Fort Bragg had reached 5,400, but in the following year, that number ballooned to 67,000. Various units trained at Fort Bragg during World War II, including the 9th Infantry Division, 2nd Armored Division, 82nd Airborne Division, 100th Infantry Division, and various field artillery groups. The population reached a peak of 159,000 during the war years.

Today, Fort Bragg is a busy base located just west of Fayetteville, North Carolina. One of the largest and busiest military complexes in the world, Fort Bragg hosts America's only airborne corps and airborne division, the Green Berets of the Special Operations Command, and the Army's largest support command. 82nd Airborne Division soldiers and others make 100,000 parachute jumps each year at Fort Bragg.

With easy access to quaint historic villages or the sprawling countryside of the North Carolina Sandhills, the area is famous for its horse farms and Pinehurst golf course communities. In addition to a host of amenities serving to create an outstanding quality of life, parts of Fort Bragg and the surrounding area sit in one of the best school systems in the Carolinas.

The Fort is a significant economic presence in North Carolina, contributing an estimated $4.1 billion annually to local communities. Fort Bragg and nearby Pope Air Force Base generate retail sales of approximately $2 billion for Cumberland County. Military personnel expenditures have proven to be a vital source of economic growth and development for both the city of Fayetteville and Cumberland County.

With a great location and a generally mild climate, North Carolina is consistently becoming a more and more popular place to live. The state's many miles of beaches and its beautiful mountains attract large numbers of visitors and vacationers each year. Chief among the great attractions are the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Cape Lookout National Seashore, Blue Ridge Parkway and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Wildlife abounds in national forests (the state has four) and in the dismal swamp. Places of historic interest include Fort Raleigh National Historic Site on Roanoke Island, the Wright Brothers National Memorial at Kitty Hawk, Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site at Flatrock and Guilford Courthouse and Moores Creek National Military Parks.
